WHAT DO LICE EGGS LOOK LIKE?

by Amy Chinian

Lice infestations can be an annoying problem, especially when it comes to identifying their presence. One of the key elements in detecting a lice infestation is understanding what lice eggs, also known as nits, look like. If you don’t get rid of the eggs, they can hatch and start a new infestation.

Let’s look further into the appearance of lice eggs, how to differentiate them from other particles and the importance of early detection and proper treatment.

What are Lice Eggs?

Lice eggs, or nits, are small oval-shaped structures laid by adult female lice at the base of the hair shafts, close to the scalp. They are firmly attached to the hair and are typically yellow, brown or tan in color. Nits are about the size of a pinhead and can easily be mistaken for dandruff or other hair debris. However, there are a few key characteristics that set lice eggs apart:
  • Location. Nits are usually found very close to the scalp, within about a quarter of an inch. They are attached to individual hair strands and are not easily brushed or shaken off like dandruff.
  • Color. While the color of nits can vary, they often appear yellow or white before hatching. After hatching, the empty nit shells may remain, giving them a whitish or translucent appearance.
  • Shape. Nits are oval-shaped and have a teardrop-like appearance. They are tiny, measuring about 0.8 mm in length, making them barely visible to the naked eye.
  • Texture. Nits have a hard, shell-like texture. Unlike dandruff or other debris, they are not easily crushed between your fingers.

Mistaking Nits for Other Particles

It’s common for parents and caregivers to mistake nits for other particles like dandruff, hair spray droplets or even dirt. However, the close examination of the characteristics mentioned above can help differentiate lice eggs from these other substances.

Importance of Early Detection and Proper Treatment

Detecting lice eggs early is crucial for effective treatment and prevention of a larger infestation. If nits are found, it’s important to use a fine-toothed comb specially designed for lice removal to meticulously remove them from the hair. Additionally, all bedding, clothing and personal items that may have come into contact with the affected person should be washed in hot water and dried on high heat to kill any remaining lice or eggs.
