CAN HAIR LICE LIVE ON CLOTHES?

by Amy Chinian
can hair lice live on clothes

When dealing with a lice infestation, it's natural to worry not only about the hair but also about clothing, bedding and other fabrics. A common question many clients have is whether hair lice can live on clothes. Understanding the
behavior of lice can help alleviate concerns and guide effective management strategies.

Let’s explore the relationship between lice and clothing and provide tips on how to manage lice effectively.

What are Hair Lice?

Hair lice, or head lice, are tiny, wingless insects that feed on small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp. They are a common problem, especially in school-aged children, but they can affect anyone. Lice are not a sign of poor hygiene or a dirty environment; rather, they spread easily through direct contact with infested hair or through sharing personal items.

Can Lice Live on Clothes?

The short answer is no, hair lice cannot live long on clothes. Lice need to feed on blood several times daily, and they can only survive off the human scalp for about 24 to 48 hours. Therefore, while it's technically possible for lice to be found on clothing, they cannot sustain an infestation there.

Why Clothing Still Matters

Even though lice cannot live long on clothes, these garments can still play a role in the spread of lice, particularly if infested clothing is shared or if clothes are stored together (like in a school locker). Lice or nits (lice eggs) may briefly attach to clothing worn close to the scalp, such as hats, scarves, or sports uniforms.

How to Manage Lice on Clothes

Here are some tips for dealing with head lice on clothing:
  • Wash Infested Clothing: If you or someone in your family has head lice, wash any potentially infested clothing in hot water (at least 130°F) and then dry on high heat. This will kill any lice or nits that may be present.
  • Seal Non-Washable Items: For items that cannot be washed, seal them in a plastic bag for at least two days. This deprives any lice on these items of their food source, ensuring they die before the bag is reopened.
  • Avoid Sharing Personal Items: Prevent lice from spreading by advising against sharing clothing, especially hats, scarves, and other items worn close to the head.
  • Regularly Clean Bedding and Stuffed Animals: Similarly, wash bedding, stuffed animals and other fabric items in hot water and dry them on high heat if they've been exposed to lice.
Safeguard Your Home from Hair Lice!

While hair lice cannot live on clothes for long, clothing can still facilitate the spread of these pests under certain conditions. By taking proactive steps to manage clothing and other fabrics, you can prevent the spread of lice and protect your family from reinfestation.
