WILL HEAD LICE DIE OFF IF NOT REMOVED?

by Amy Chinian

Head lice are more common than you might think! An estimated 6 to 12 million people get head lice each year, and most of them are children. No parent is happy to receive news that their child has lice, but there are plenty of options that can take care of these pests if you have the right lice product.

However, you may be wondering what will happen if you let the head lice ‘run their course.’ Will they eventually die off? Or will they cause more problems for your child? While individual head lice will die, the infestation will continue to grow. Not only is this uncomfortable for your child, but also they’ll be spreading lice to others.

Let’s learn more about the head lice lifespan and the importance of delivering quick, effective treatment.

What is the Life Cycle of a Louse?

The average life cycle for a louse is 30 days. If a female louse finds its way onto a host, it will start to lay eggs almost immediately. Females become fully mature in two weeks, laying about 10 eggs a day. The eggs take 7 to 9 days to hatch and develop into adults, and they continue the life cycle.

Eventually, the infestation will grow from mild to moderate to severe. It will not just stop on its own. And, there are no natural, everyday activities that will get rid of lice. For instance, shampooing and blow drying your child’s hair will not eliminate lice. These are hardy pests that have the ability to hold their breath for 8 hours!

How to Get Rid of a Head Lice Infestation

If your child only has one or two nits, you can comb them out using a lice comb. Anything more than this and we recommend treatment. The goal of treatment is to eliminate the lice so that nothing is left to continue the life cycle.

While you can find various treatment products in stores, we typically do not recommend them. These products often contain harsh ingredients that can cause skin irritation and other adverse reactions. Home remedies like mayonnaise or olive oil are also ineffective - and they’re messy!

The better option is to use all-natural, kid-safe head lice products from My Hair Helpers. All of our products are made from safe ingredients like peppermint and spearmint. They are guaranteed to work, and you can use them on anyone in the household, including newborns!
