Q and A with Head Lice Expert Amy Chinian

Head lice are incredibly common among young children, yet the stigma that surrounds them remains surprisingly strong.
Just hearing the word “lice” can send families into a panic. But here’s the truth: lice don’t carry disease, they don’t cause infections, and they’re not a sign of poor hygiene. The biggest nuisance they bring? Itching from their bites. Still, despite the facts, head lice are often (and unfairly) associated with “being dirty.”
So you can imagine how Amy Chinian, when as a mother of four and one on the way, felt when she discovered that she and her children had lice. Rather than receiving support, she was met with isolation from family, friends, and even her community.
Determined to fix the problem, Amy headed to the store and bought several lice products. But nothing seemed to work - lice and nits kept coming back. What finally made a difference was a lice removal service that came to her home, a rare offering back in the 1990s.
That visit changed everything.
Helping Families Live Lice-Free Since 2008
After finally getting the help she needed, Amy felt relief, and more importantly, she felt empowered. From that experience, the idea for My Hair Helpers was born. Amy set out to create a company that offered not just effective lice products, but also compassion, education, and support for families going through the same stressful experience she had once faced.
Amy’s goal was simple: help other families feel confident, supported, and lice-free with products she could wholeheartedly stand behind.
Today, we’re excited to sit down with Amy and hear more about her journey—how a stressful season of motherhood turned into a mission to help others, and how My Hair Helpers became the trusted brand it is today.
Q&A Session with Amy, Your Head Lice Expert
Q: What made you start a career out of removing head lice?
A: When my kids had lice 26 years ago, there was only one company in the city of Los Angeles that knew how to help people! I was so amazed that somebody came to my house and knew something about it because no one else did! The over-the-counter treatments were not effective.
When I started my journey, I was only going to help people, and then I realized that this was bigger than just helping people; this was a small niche I could venture into! I watched a lady at the school from a company and I heard a voice in my head. I believe it was God…you can do this!
My motivation wasn’t money, but it was always helping people.
Q: What is the longest a client had gone with a head lice infestation before coming to you?
A: The longest I have seen a customer with lice is 2 years! By that time the head is scabbed and matted. It takes time and patience to comb it all out.
Q. What is the biggest bug you’ve ever removed from someone’s hair?
A. Strangely enough, the biggest bug I ever removed was from a little girl who just got back from Paris, France! It was as big as an ant. Lice bugs are typically as big as a flea or smaller, depending on the life cycle.
Q. When families come to your lice salons in Southern California, they must arrive scared and frustrated. Describe the transformation process from the time they walk in, until the time they leave.
A: I do see huge transformations in the mental state and physical state of the people that come to see me at my salons. Most people come in grossed out and scared. They think that lice are living in their house and they have to clean and bag everything.
Once I explain that lice are passed through head-to-head and cannot live off the hair, they’re more relaxed. Then I explain that everybody gets lice, it doesn’t matter who you are. It’s no indicator of socioeconomic status or hygiene. It’s none of those issues. It’s just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Head-to-head contact only.
People can relax and feel at ease and they leave with their hair all cleaned out!
